Sometimes you just have to have something special – and with our Hawaiian Chocolate Coconut Cake, you can really show off. I bet none of your guests ate it!

Ingredients for 1 cake pan (diameter approx. 22 cm):

  • For the dough:
  • 200 g of butter biscuits, whole grain
  • 60 grams of butter
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • For filling:
  • 750 ml coconut milk, creamy
  • 140 grams of sugar
  • 65 g of corn starch
  • 120 g of chocolate, chopped
  • 1 tsp coconut flavor (optional)
  • For the top:
  • 120 g of whipped cream
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • Chocolate bark or grater for decoration

Preparation time:

  • 60 minutes (plus 3-8 hours for cooling)

And this is how it is done:

  1. In the first step, place the butter cookies in a freezer bag, seal tightly, and crush the cookies with a pot or a cookie cutter. Melt the butter in a saucepan, then mix the biscuit crumbs and a pinch of salt in a bowl.
  2. Place the dough in the tart pan, pressing it evenly into the base – don’t forget the edges!
  3. Pour the coconut milk into a pot and heat it. Mix the sugar and cornstarch and heat it all together, stirring constantly. The liquid should evaporate, but not boil.
  4. Strain off about a third of the liquid and set aside for now. Leave the rest of the pot on the stove and stir in the chopped chocolate until completely melted. Continue heating until the mixture thickens properly. Then we pour the chocolate-coconut mixture on the dough in the cake pan and spread it evenly. Smooth the surface. Now put the cake in the freezer and continue to prepare.
  5. Pour the remaining coconut milk mixture into another pot and return to the oven. Heat on medium flame and whisk the mass vigorously until a thick texture is formed.
  6. Carefully pour this mixture over the chocolate layer of the cake and spread evenly. The chocolate layer should now be firm enough so that the two layers do not mix.
  7. Cover the cake pan with cling film. The foil should lie as directly on the top coconut layer as possible to prevent a skin from forming. Allow to cool for at least 3 hours (preferably overnight).
  8. Just before serving, add the cold cream to a cold bowl with the sugar and beat until stiff. Decorate the cake with cream. Either just diffuse it or put it on dabs. Now sprinkle chocolate flakes or crumbs on top – it’s done!

Admittedly, this Hawaiian Chocolate Haupia Pie, also known as “Chocolate Haupia Pie,” isn’t exactly easy to make. But here all the effort is really worth it! The combination of the juicy biscuit base, the gorgeous chocolate and coconut filling and the airy whipped cream top is simply phenomenal and will inspire everyone. Guaranteed!

By the way: Haupia is actually a pudding-like dessert that has long been served in Hawaii. Giving treats at weddings has even been a tradition since the 1940s. Creating a delicious cream cake was just a great idea – in our opinion.
